For all of you, that do not follow my blog, I write here some words about the Baltic Sea Challenge.
This summer we had the funny idea to develop a glaze, that consists completely out of stones that can be found of the shore of the Baltic sea. Talcum and firestone (quartz) are available of course everywhere, but where to find the necessary flux material? The ice age boulders at the shore are a mixture of various materials and in granite one normally can find higher ratios of feldspar (besides quartz and mica). Now, how to identify “good” granite? I collected several batches of stones to be on the safe side, all of those were similar to ones that could be found in internet.
On the shore I also found some stones with higher iron content, that I planned to use for coloring the glaze.
As a resume, the Baltic- Sea- Challenge is for me a big success from the glaze nature and the warm color, and will be a good addition to the Wabisabi portfolio.
The detailed article can be found earlier in this blog.
Update: This autumn I collected enough stones to prepare a good supply of glaze. Currently the stones are milled and dried, but next year you can find ceramic with the new glaze in my shop.
