Chawan 4586
Hello,
I plan to show periodically some of the products for sale in more details. Today I describe a tea bowl, the Chawan 4586.
Data:
Material: Stoneware clay. A lightly grogged white clay body.
Production: Base shape thrown on pottery wheel, partially formed manually afterwards.
Dimensions: Diameter approx. 11cm, Height approx. 8cm
Firing: Wood firing at 1300°C, addition of salt and soda to achieve a partially shining surface.
Glaze/Slip: shino glaze inside, almost fully opaque. Nezumi Shino on the outside. Nezumi-Shino (mouse-gray shino) is very famous and is achieved by overlaying a shino glaze over a Gosu slip. Then the surface needs to become textured.
The original Gosu recipe (e.g. from B. Leach) is difficult to create, as one of the ingredients is black Cobalt Oxide, which is very special and hardly to be purchased outside of Japan. Various metal oxides cause a very dense black color.
The value of the chawan can be seen in the details.
Areas with little shino glaze or areas, where the glaze has been removed partially show a heavy metal layer, almost like a welding seam.
Areas with heavy layers of shino show white glaze spots, eventually with some blue shades caused by the cobalt oxide.
